HYDRA - DEEPER THAN BONES

BY SOHEYL DAHI

USA 2006

"In the mid-Nineties I traveled to Hydra twice to get a sense of the place that figures so prominently in the history of Leonard Cohen. The result are the poems in this book. These poems are not necessarily about Leonard Cohen, but without his ghost roaming around the island they could not have been written either. So thank you, Mr. Cohen." - Soheyl Dahi
At sunset
I go to the highest point
on Hydra and
lay flat out on my back.
To my right is the orange
haze of the Aegean.
Above me the immense sky.
The only sound is a distant
rumor of Greek music.
I see the lights of Hydra,
a chain of pearls,
bone-white, forming skeletons.
I must have defeated
a minor god to be here.
With my index finger
I kiss
the ground.
