It was a sunday afternoon L.A. party, synonymous with Hollywood insiders, poolside chic, casual trendy-- such stuff California dreams are made of. I was there with some friends, not professionally, but i had grown accustomed to my camera bag doubling for a tote bag stuffed full of whatever it was that i needed . There was no shortage of industry names, and famous faces, but for me there was no one more impressive than the singer/songwriter poet, Leonard Cohen. I was raised in Montreal, and lived there through my college years so i was well aware of this important artist. He was a counsellor at the summer camp my friend went to while growing up, and he is Montreal's very own living legend. So i just simply asked if i could take his picture, to which he agreed, and it has always been one of my favorite portraits. I gave him a print and he seemed to approve.
